The Study Course in Transnational and European Legal Studies stands out among the teaching activities provided for by the Excellence Project “Di Sea Gual” (2023-2027).
To satisfy the demands of the employment market, the Course provides legal practitioners with competences which enable them to develop a wide range of professional skills within a labour context with international nature (legal advice in international organisations, in administrative law and third sector areas, in enterprises, banks and services, as well as in public institutions and public and private organisations).
Taking into accounts the professional figures whom the Course aims at training and the wide number of potentially interested people, mostly from abroad, all the subjects will be taught in English language and the teaching methods are based upon a case-by-case approach.
The Degree Programme is structured in three years during which students shall obtain 180 credits by means of exams, training activities of free choice, and final exam. Further activities are provided for, which are aimed at the acquisition of further linguistic skills, by way of requiring students to choose among Spanish, German, French, and Italian. The choice of the Italian language aims at facilitating the access of graduates to the advanced degree courses of the Law Department, which has recently activated a degree course in innovation and sustainability law, as well as to masters in force at the Law Department.
The Course in Transnational and European Legal Studies considerably differs from the 5-years Degree Course in Law (LMG 01) for not being aimed at training lawyers for purposes of the traditional legal professions, as well as from the 2- years advanced degree course in innovation and sustainability law (LM SC-GIUR); furthermore, access to such courses may constitute a relevant perspective for graduates.
Moreover, the subjects of this Course different from those included both in the degree course in labour consultants and science of legal services, in force at the Law Department, and in the degree course in law of new technologies, in force at the Department of Political and Juridical Sciences.
The proposal of institution of this Course is also innovative in relation to the educational offer, which is currently in force at the national level, since similar course exist neither in South Italy nor in the two major islands (i.e., Sicily and Sardinia). Moreover, even the degree courses in force in central-northern Italy have different characteristics and contents from those of the Course in Transnational and European Legal Studies, which therefore aims at filling the gap of the educational offer that are today active in South Italy and the major islands. At the national level, only four courses belonging to the L-14- degree class in English language are in force at Universities from central-northern Italy, which are characterised by an international and/or transnational-comparative law approach.
Due to the transnational features of the study of the proposed Course, students shall be constantly encouraged to use the opportunities provided by the University of Messina and the Law Department to carry out training periods abroad (Erasmus, double degree, traineeship, fellowships to write the degree thesis abroad etc.). Moreover, students will be enabled to access a placement period, which can also take place in multinationals enterprises and international organisations. The Degree Course will develop a network of contacts with universities, multinational societies, international organisations, and representatives of professions where students can spend placement periods.
